On Wednesday, March 30, 2011, the Buffalo Chamber Players continue their critically acclaimed concert series with “Sex & Politics,” a new work by WNY composer Rob Deemer with guest soprano Tony Arnold.
Written for the Buffalo Chamber Players, “Sex & Politics” is scored for voice and a nine-piece ensemble of strings, woodwinds and brass. The performance will feature world-renowned, Grammy-nominated soprano Tony Arnold. The piece comprises settings of six poems by the American poet e.e. cummings.
“Neither sex nor politics are subjects that are often explored overtly in abstract concert music,” Deemer says, “but in conjunction with cummings’ texts, it’s possible to see the humor and pain inherent in these everyday ideas. It might be a risky subject matter for my first work with the Players, but what’s life without a little risk?”
Appointed this season as the Buffalo Chamber Players’ Composer-in-Residence, Rob Deemer chairs the composition department at the School of Music at SUNY Fredonia.
The evening’s program also includes Maurice Ravel’s “Sonata for violin and cello”, Alexandre Tansman’s “Septet for winds and strings” and Charles Koechlin’s “Trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon.”
The Buffalo Chamber Players is a critically acclaimed ensemble presenting innovative chamber music programs performed by the region’s finest musicians. Formed in 2007 by BPO violist Janz Castelo, the Players’ mission is to challenge and redefine the public’s perception of chamber music and to promote the city of Buffalo as an inspiring place to live, work and play.
The concert takes place at Buffalo Seminary, 205 Bidwell Parkway at 7:30 PM, and is open to the public. Tickets are $15/$5 for students and available here or at the door.
